Initial Teacher Training Route

There are two ITT training routes available, ITT Employment based and ITT Fee funded, both lasting one academic year on a full time basis. Trainees achieve QTS on successful completion with an option to gain a PGCE accredited by University of East London if they complete three assignments to a level 7 standard. It may be possible to build up Masters credits through this initial course with additional credits for successful completion of the induction year with the remainder gained at a later date.

The majority of training will be school based with a centrally delivered professional studies programme presented by top practitioners from the BTSA partnership schools network. You will be supported by a trained mentor within your host school and an external mentor provided by Tes Institute as well as the senior manager in your host school responsible for ITT. The external mentor (pathway tutor) will complete six on site visits and carry out a weekly online check of the progress made.

You will work in your host school four days a week for the majority of the course but will complete a half term second placement, taking place from January to February half term. Other school visits will include days in the sectors above and below your phase as well as experience in a special school. Approximately one day a week will be allocated for professional development through the professional studies programme.

ITT Employment based routes 

The level 6 Postgraduate Teaching Apprenticeship is aimed at trainees who have some experience of working in education, are interested in becoming a teacher and are employed in a mainstream primary, secondary school or specialist setting.

Our apprenticeship is an alternative to a traditional full-time university course. Apprentices follow a structured, 12-month course of online and in-school training that is specific to their subject and age range, and embeds the DfE ITE Core Content Framework. Following QTS accreditation, apprentices will have an end point assessment, in the next term, usually within 3 months.


Our Fee funded ITT Teacher Training tuition fees for academic year:

  • £8,625 leading to QTS only
  • £9,250 leading to QTS and a PGCE

Successful candidates will be subject to an Enhanced Criminal Record Disclosure from the Disclosure and Barring Service along with other relevant employment checks, including overseas criminal background checks, where applicable. All new trustees, employees and volunteers will be required to undertake safeguarding training in induction which will be regularly updated in line with statutory guidance.
