The BTSA is delighted to be able to offer a series of three online Oracy training programmes, for different age groups, aimed at all teaching and support staff working with children to encourage effective communication skills to support learning and relationship building for young people aged 2-14 years. Oracy in KS3 is aimed at practitioners working with children aged 11-14 years.

Oracy can be defined as the range of speaking and listening skills, behaviours and language necessary for effective communication and collaboration. Oracy skills encompass physical, social and emotional, linguistic and cognitive aspects of learning.

Why Oracy matters?
"
The things we say and how we say them can inform, influence, inspire and motivate others and express our empathy, understanding and creativity. It is our ability to communicate that enables us to build positive relationships, collaborate for common purpose, deliberate and share our ideas as citizens."
Beccy Earnshaw, Director, Voice 21 & Peter Hyman, Executive Headteacher, School 21 in Will Millard and Loic Menzies 'The State of Speaking in Our Schools'.

Oracy is argued to reduce the attainment gap of those most disadvantaged pupils (Alexander, 2017) and is essential for effective learning (Nicol & Andrews, 2018; Alexander, 2012).

This session will look at:

  • Ways we can encourage students to develop and enhance good oracy skills to aid communication
  • How we can introduce oracy into classrooms
  • The development of oracy skills
  • How to encourage parents to become involved
