The BTSA is delighted to be able to offer three online 'Oracy' training programmes aimed at embedding oracy into everyday teaching to support effective communication for young people aged 3-16 years.

Oracy can be defined as the range of speaking and listening skills, behaviours and language necessary for effective communication and collaboration. Oracy skills encompass physical, social and emotional, linguistic and cognitive aspects of learning. Teaching oracy means putting more intention behind how you guide and organise your students' talk. When they gather for group work or discussions, give them talking guidelines, roles and tools. Oracy is argued to reduce the attainment gap of those most disadvantaged pupils (Alexander, 2017) and is essential for effective learning (Nicol & Andrews, 2018; Alexander, 2012).

Recent research by the Education Endowment Foundation (EEF) suggests that lockdown and other measures taken to combat the pandemic have deprived young people of social contact and experiences essential to supporting and developing their communication skills.

This session will cover:

  • How to include and embed oracy into everyday classrooms
  • Practice using oracy skills through practical tasks
  • Look at opportunities to utilise oracy within humanities subjects

Please view attached flyer for programme details: Oracy in Humanities

The BTSA is pleased to offer two additional Oracy training programmes; Oracy in the STEM Subjects and Oracy in the Arts (please select appropriate buttons below for further details)

All three oracy programmes are suitable for both primary and secondary phases.
